That’s the bold topic tonight at Drinks and Dialogue, a independent community event organized by up and coming local community porganizer, Tim Smith.
Learn more about Tim and his provocative discussion series in this recent Citizen-Times article by Jason Sandford of the Ashvegas blog. From the article:
Smith has hosted five other Drinks and Dialogue events at various venues. The biggest crowd — about 65 people — turned out for a discussion about whether or not Asheville is a segregated city.
It was such a popular topic that Smith is going to host another chat about the issue at 8 p.m. Friday at the Hole-N-Da-Wall nightclub on Market Street. The event, which includes a potluck dinner, is in conjunction with the YWCA’s Stand Against Racism series of events the same day.
The talk “is important, because we live in a city of roughly 80,000 people and daily interaction (between whites and blacks) is so separate. I think we should be more of a community,” Smith said.
Smith’s Drinks and Dialogue event series mixes blacks and whites socially and in dialogue like nothing I’ve ever seen in this town where my friends aren’t racist, but no one seems to have many friends of another race. Maybe it’s because Tim truly cares about this issue. Maybe it’s because he’s black, and therefore more connected to black Asheville than just another Asheville white person trying to go good.
From Smith’s blog:
Drinks and Dialogue is an open forum for locals to come together and talk about social issues.
Well the last Drinks and Dialogue was held back in November and the community has been asking me when I was gonna host the next one. Mark your calendars: Friday April 29th Drinks and Dialogue will be held at Hole-N-Da-Wall 44 Market St. Asheville, NC. This event is in sponsorship with the YWCA Asheville chapter with there annually “Stand Against Racism” campaign.
The topic of discussion is, is Asheville segregated, if so why? This will be part 3 of this series, which always guarantees alot of dialogue. See ya there!
