Franzi Charen’s “Love Asheville” campaign, buy-local advocacy group celebrated as model for communities across the U.S.

by Jennifer Saylor on February 19, 2012

In recent weeks, Hip Replacements co-owner Franzi Charen has received phone calls from community leaders across the nation, enthusiastic to pursue a Go Local Card with their own school systems.

Later this year she’ll champion the idea as a featured speaker at this year’s American Independent Business Alliance’s annual conference in Kentucky. (via the Asheville Citizen-Times)

The school my kids attend were buying lunches for kids through Taco Bell once a week. The school called it “Taco Tuesday” and it was an ongoing fundraiser. I refused to participate because Taco Bell food is yuck and I’d rather support a locally owned business. I contacted Franzi who helped me develop a case for buying local and I presented it to the school. Upon learning they could support a local business AND sell healthy food to the students AND operate the ongoing fundraiser, the decision makers at the school decided to start working with locally owned and operated Neo Burrito. It was a win all the way around! Buying local really can work!
